Sun 18 Aug - Roughie, Market, Kananja, Kendra Erin, Rob&Cherie, cats dinner
I was up early today to listen to a very special game of AFL football, when the Hawks played the Gold Coast. This would be the last game in the career of Jarryd Roughead who, with Lance Franklin, formed the most dynamic forward duo in the history of the game. Some serious injuries and a bout of cancer limited his total number of games played, and this year time caught up with him as he found he didn't have the sheer pace required to play the game style demanded by the coach. So since this is the last game Hawthorn will play in Melbourne this year, the selection panel decided to give him one last game in the Firsts (after playing most of the years for the Seconds at Box Hill) in front of the local fans. Rita and I met Jarryd at dinner several years ago when we were Player Sponsors for Hawthorn, and he stuck in our memories as a very friendly bloke from the country, who thought about more than just football. And so, in true fairy tale fashion, he played his last game today and kicked 6 goals in a big win, including a final goal of which any player (irrespective of age) would have been proud. Well done Roughie!
After the game, we went up to the Sunday Market, and it was the biggest market I've ever seen in Moissac; the entire square was full of traders, and the crowd was huge. Moissac knows how to do markets!
After the market, I went for a walk along the quai and met up with Roy (on Karanja) and Kevin and Michelle (on Kendra Erin). It's good to see old barging friends still in Moissac. Roy (and Verne, who is currently in England) did their ICC training on Kanumbra, while Kevin and Michelle were the Petanque champions from the 2018 Barging Festival in Moissac.
In the afternoon, Rita went swimming with Valerie, while I did some more ivy sucker cleaning, then had a quick nap. When Rita came home we went down to the Tarn Quai to catch up with Rob and Cherie, then went over with them to their newly renovated house near the double-lock. They (along with Nico, and Kaz and Iain) have done a great job on the renovations; they seem pretty pleased with the result.
That evening, Rita and I had a quiet dinner on the belvedere, in the company of Ginger and Whitey. They both love to just hang around wherever we are, and are even learning (slowly) not to jump up on the table when we are eating (even if they sometimes do give us the "evil eye").
