Sat 17 Aug - verandah brekky, market, shoes, swim, ivy suckers, Don&Laura, Parvis

We started the day with breakfasr on the front/back verandah facing the canal. Whitey insisted on joining us at the table, which gave me a chance of a good close-up photo of him. We then headed down to the Saturday Market. I visited my favourite shoe market store, and bought some casual sneakers and a pair of running shoes (for walking). We then headed over to the Compostelle Cafe for a morning coffee/beer. While Rita ducked into the Intermarche shop, I waited on the corner and surprised Rob and Cherie (from Rovi 1) as they came around the corner. We had a good chat and were soon joined by Rita; we promised to catch up again tomorrow when we both have a bit of free time.

After we got home, Rita went to St Nicolas de Grave for a swim, while I continued picking the ivy suckers off the brickwork and woodwork of the belvedere. I found that the use of a steel spatula was good for cleaning the suckers off the woodwork, but that it was not very effective on the brickwork or mortar (which was left to finger and thumb to try pulling it off). As always, Ginger was very interested to just sit nearby and observe what I was doing. But when he selected the woodwork as a good place to sit, no amount of encouragement was going to get him to move!

In the late afternoon, Don and Laura came over to the house for a catch-up, and we chatted for a couple of hours, before retiring inside to the cool of the house to have dinner. Rita and I then went up to the Parvis to catch a steelband who were playing at the Saturday night concert. They were technically very good, but not very entertaining, since with the exception of one player, they had very little "oomph" in their presentation. Also, each song sounded very much like the previous songs, since none of them were recognisable to most of the audience.

We decided to leave before they finished, but as we were leaving we saw Jack and Sarna, who invited us to sit down for a drink. So we joined them until the performance finished. Rita then decided to go say hello to the band, and see where they came from. The lead pannist had been a member of Calypsociation from Paris, while most of the rest were from St Antonin Noble Val. They were very glad that Rita had introduced herself, since they had been asked many times during the night if they knew "the steelband from Australia" who had played at the Parvis in the past. It was good to see that the Moissac audience remembered us, and tonight's band was very pleased to be able to put a face to our band.
