Monday 1 Sept - petanque, down-river cruise, Uvarium Concert, Coates, Tango
After the late-night finish to the Karaoke Night, Monday morning began at the respectable hour of 1000h with the Petanque Competition in the Uvarium Park. Twelve teams (of two) participated, with a couple of standby teams replacing a couple of no-shows (must have partied too hard last night). The format was sudden-death knockout, with the six winners in round one plus the two best losers progressing through to the second round, then down to four, then to two playing off in the final. The quality of play was surprisingly good for a Monday morning, but the eventual winners (Pomme de Mer 2) were a cut above the rest.
Following the excitement of Petanque, it was time for the second of the river cruises; this time down river to the confluence of the Rivers Tarn and Garonne. Because of the need to go through the old lock near the Moulin at the start of the cruise, and the relatively narrow channels at the confluence, today’s cruise was more single-file than spread across the river, until we got to the turning point a few kilometres up the Garonne. Then it was time to return to port, after another very relaxing afternoon. From the smiles on all the faces, it seemed that everyone enjoyed the cruise again.
After returning to port, it was time to start setting up for the Fish’n’Chips dinner and the Pans on Fire concert. Unfortunately, Tom Hollows new barge did not make it to Moissac, having been struck down with a fuel leakage problem in Montauban, so the band would not be playing on deck, but would be playing in the Uvarium Park. While Kaz and Iain set up the tables and chairs for the dinner, we set up the band.
Once again, Lisa and Rita did a great job filling in between sets with singing and solo pan.
Then all too soon the Fetes de Plaisanciers came to a close with the final event, a demonstration of Argentinian Tango dancing at the Uvarium Cafe.
For us, the weekend had been successful on two fronts; firstly, the band had made a great impact at both the Saturday night concert near the Abbey, and the Monday night concert at the Uvarium. Secondly, the Fetes de Plaisanciers had been a great success with 30 boats and over a hundred people. All this was done on a shoestring budget, but was a success because many people helped with the organisation (Kaz and Iain, the Moissac Mairie, the Sunbeam Cafe, the Uvarium Cafe, the Pans on Fire band, the Kickshins band, Terry and Sandra Lalley, the Argentinian Tango duo, and all the people who turned up). We were personally very pleased to see Peter and Kaye Coates come up from Talairan to see the Monday night concert, and hence complete a circle that started 4 years earlier, with that fateful bike ride from their house.
