Sunday 18 August - Finish The Partner, paint touch-ups, varnish wheelhouse
Finished reading “The Partner” by John Grisham. it was different from his other novels, since there was no character with whom one could associate – they all seemed a bit cold and unlikable. But the twists at the end more than made up for any problems identifying with the characters.
In the afternoon, I did some painting touch-ups on the railings on the barge, where they had been damaged by collisions with lock walls etc.
I also found the varnish that Chris Farmer had left in the engine room, and proceeded to varnish the outside of the wheelhouse. As Chris said, it needed very little preparation, with just a light sanding on some areas that had started to flake badly around the window frames. The new varnish then dissolved some of the old varnish, giving a very good finish with minimal use of varnish. Given how much I used and how much is left in the tin, I should have enough for doing the wheelhouse for the next 5 years.
