Tuesday 17 July - walk above Rhone Valley, lenticular clouds, Big Band Concert
The Monday night with Peter and Judy was so pleasant that, in true barging tradition, we decided to stay with them in Anzere another day. In the morning, they took us on a walk along the bis that flows through Anzere. Then in the late morning, we joined up with some friends of theirs who were going for a walk in the mountains on the south side of the Rhone Valley, near the town on Veysonnaz, ending up at Restaurant les Chottes, an alpine restaurant about 2000m above sea level. The walk itself was not too strenuous, but very attractive high above the Rhone Valley, while the lunch was very social and relaxing.
Over lunch we were fascinated by the variety of Lenticular (lens-shaped) clouds we saw over the mountains on the north side of the Rhone Valley. They formed and re-formed continuously and Peter, being a world champion hot air balloonist, had great delight in explaining the intricacies of the cloud formations, and the associated air movements, to us.
That evening, we went across to Crans Montana (where all the rich people hang out) to go to a performance put on by "Ambassadors of Music USA", a program where high school students from various states in the USA put on performances in various cities around Europe. Tonight's performance was by students from the State of Washington, and featured a massed band of about 120 players, a choir of about 70 singers and a jazz band of about 12.
