Sunday 26 Aug - painting the cabin rooftop
Warm day, with some clouds - perfect for painting. Got everything ready, then received a call from Rita in late morning asking me to go to the market and buy a beret for Julian. Only one hat seller today, so not much choice, but they did have some good berets. Then back to the boat and starting painting at noon, after realizing that the enamel paint was not water based (obviously) and I had no turps. So decided that brushes etc would be sacrificed at end of day, but also meant I had to finish today. Did the deck railings first with a brush, and first coat on spots that needed extra cover, with International Toplac Ivory (YKA187).
Then the drip rail around the deck, and all the edging around vents, dog box, mast and fittings. This first stage was the most tedious, but the brushes gave a surprisingly smooth finish on the smooth surfaces. The enamel flowed well to even out any minor brush strokes. Then used the small roller to do the gritted area between the railings and the drip rails. At this stage I realized that I had to do the sides of the wheelhouse where the old SRS numbers were painted, and will finish the rest of the wheelhouse next year.
The final stage was the top of the deck, where I used the large roller. This was the largest surface area, but the quickest to do. Then went down and touched up all the side railings that had suffered damage in locks during the year. Took a total of about 2 litres of International enamel paint. Since it was getting late in the day when I finished (about 8pm) I decided to leave the green touch-ups for the start of next year. All in all a very productive day, and well deserving of a beer or two. Even though the top of the cabin is now much lighter than the sides of the cabin, in many light conditions it just looks like shadow on the sides that is causing the difference. But one day, I will have to repaint the sides as well.
