Friday 10 Aug - back to Pont de Sables wild-mooring, very hot day
Set off in late morning to head to Pont les Sables, so that we could go to a Festival in Mermande on Saturday, which would feature lots of "historical" things. It was a quick trip to Meilhan, where we said hello/goodbye to Donald/Laura and David/Evelyn. We stopped 1km east of Meilhan for lunch, after nearly running aground after a momentarily lapse in concentration. We were passed by a large commercial peniche (not many left on the Garonne) then overtaken by Mike (Meilhan port captain) taking a new hiree through their first lock. Waited for them to clear then continued on. At Bernes Ecluse, the weedeater which we'd followed from Fontets cut in front to get into the lock. We went to wait at an old freight dock, but got the zigzag fender rope caught in a deteriorating wooden sleeper and ripped the rope through the fender. Recovered the fender and reattached it with old rope, but will need to readjust lengths after we get to our mooring for the night. We then waited again, then followed the weedeater to lock 45, after which we then moored for the night just west of Pont des Sables. It had been a hot day, so a bucket of cool water was called for in which to rest the feet. Then we had a quiet night reading on the back deck and enjoying the mist from the cornfield watering system opposite.
