Sun 7 Aug - umbrella fishing, Navillars, deep lock, Deluz trio, glider, Besançon
We woke on Sunday morning after hearing voices at the back of our boat. Initially unsure of where we were (this often happens when awakening in a new port), we got dressed quickly to go check on the intruders. However, we found that rather than being on our boat, the voices were from several people on-shore near the back of our boat, who were trying to retrieve an umbrella from the Port Cafe that had blown into the canal during the night. We gave them a hand, and a loan of our pole that we sometimes use to lift ropes onto bollards. Within 5 more minutes, the umbrella had been rescued.
Since we were now wide awake, we had breakfast and then left the port at 1000h. Unlike yesterday, today's cruise was uneventful, with no surprises at any of the locks. However, we were puzzled as we aproached Deluz, when we saw three boats anchored in the middle of the river. We made up all sorts of reasons for why they may have been there (e.g. an evacuation of the Deluz Port, two boats coming to the rescue of a distressed boat etc), until we passed them and looked back, and saw various types of dingies and inflatables attached to the rear of the boats. Clearly, three boats with kids aboard were just having a party/picnic in the middle of the river.
We continued through Deluz without stopping this time, but eventually stopped for lunch at the Novillars pontoon. After lunch we headed onto the deep Ecluse 48 at Chalèze, after passing another installation of rocky groynes along the edge of the canal.
After exiting Ecluse 48, we cruised past the recreation centre and piscine near the Besançon Airport, where we spotted a glider getting a ride behind a launching aircraft (it almost felt like we were back in Moissac). Then just a couple more long gentle turns before we passed through the last lock and moored in Besançon for the night.
