Thurs 27 June - 6am, brekky, walk, Rhone au Rhin, Doubs, fish, swim, Dole dinner
Since today was forecast to be heatwave temperatures again (38-40 degrees), we decided to take advantage of the cooler morning weather to go for a walk down to the Canal de Rhone au Rhin and then on to the River Doubs. It wasn't exactly cool, but it was a lot cooler than it would be later. When we reached the Canal, I convinced Rita that it was about time she slowed down and relaxed a bit. So we found the nearest bench, and she tried her best to relax. Which she managed to do for about 15 minutes! From little things, big things grow!
But we were soon up again and on our way to the nearby River Doubs. When we got to the bridge crossing the Doubs, we saw some fishermen a little upstream who seemed to be enjoying themselves.
However, on looking directly below us from the bridge, we saw that perhaps they were fishing in the wrong spot, with hundreds of 30cm fish feeding in the water as they hovered in place against the current.
Rita thought this looked too tempting, and was soon down by the river joining the fish (actually scaring them away a little until they got used to her). The smaller ones stayed around and started nibbling at her feet.
But the cooler weather couldn't last for long, and we soon felt it getting warmer. So we wandered our way back to our A/C cubby house at the IBIS, and waited out the remainder of the day. Around 9pm we ventured out again and drove into central Dole, where we had dinner at the Moulin Restaurant, in a delightful environment. As Rita paid the bill, she chatted up the owner of the restaurant and got a good contact (and the promise of a personal recommendation) for arranging for her to play there in late-September with her Scotch&Dry trio.
As we left late at night, the view of the cathedral seemed to capture the spirit of Dole.
