Thurs 8 Aug - misty morning, departure, river views, Deluz, bike ride, swallows
The morning dawned fine, but misty on the water. We found ourselves surrounded by kayaks, each with a novice kayaker, and they were going in all directions. But when Rita told them we were about to depart, they very quickly got out of the way! And so we headed out of Besanćon, but figured there was still plenty to see and do on a return visit.
As we approached the first lock, the mist was still hovering over the water.
The run north from Besanćon was passing through increasingly mountainous terrain, with the occasional village and spire...
... and the occasional cows eating and drinking by the shore.
We decided to call it quits for the day when we reached Deluz, since we were unsure if we would find another mooring in the time available that afternoon. There were plenty of boats on the finger pontoon moorings, but we went through to the other side of town and pulled up parallel to the shore, across from the symbolic chimney that one always sees in photos of the Deluz port.
Since we still had plenty of daylight left, we decided to go for a bike ride back along the canal we had just traversed, under the plane trees lining the entrance to Deluz.
We rode back as far as Novillars, where we had seen a double mooring pontoon, with a sign saying "Food&Music" and a Bar next door. However, when we got there we realised the Food was from a van, the Music was from a CD player, and the Bar was closed! Nonetheless, we stopped for a cool drink at the food van, and then explored Vaire-le-Petit and VAIRE-LE-GRAND on the way home. When we got back to Deluz, we rode around the hard-stand area across from us near the chimney, and found this boat which we thought might amuse some folks back home.
The water alongside the boat was very clear, and cold, as Rita discovered when she went for a swim.
As she was swimming, the swallows appeared in great numbers, and took an attraction to the wall of the factory opposite.
When Rita finished her swim and towelled off a bit, her hair was still a bit curly, as was mine, so we took this selfie in honour of the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock.
Later in the evening, I was lucky to be looking upwards when the half-moon made an appearance over the hillside, right next to the Deluz chimney. Not often you get this confluence of shapes and sights (and just fortunate that the iPhone captured it so well).
Even later, as the moon had moved across the sky, the night-time port looked fabulous...
... while the church with rounded spire looked great in the evening sky.
Late at night, the grandpa, grandma, mother and daughter from our neighbouring boat went for a walk, and posed for a selfie on their return to the boat. Looked like a good extended-family holiday.
We moored just behind a little boat named "Baise", which was previously a Locaboat Penichette 935 hire boat (interestingly, this was one type of boat I actually considered in our original search). However, the new owner has done a lot of modifications, including a complete paint job (plus a musical score written along the side of the boat), so that now it doesn't look as much like a hire boat. We tried to work out the sound of the musical score, thinking that it must be a favourite tune of his. However, when Rita asked, he said that he just found a transparent decal that he thought was neat, and just stuck it on the boat! An ideal boat for two, but it seemed to be handling two extra people OK.
