Saturday 16 Sept - tarp test, Montauban, packing, Kaz and Ian, Lyon, Besain

Last night’s heavy rain continued throughout the night, which gave a good test for the tarpaulin wrapping we did yesterday. We found several places where the water pooled, and made some adjustments to the tie-downs to minimise them. Hopefully the tarps will survive the torments of winter. Today was the last day in Moissac for Craig and Ginger (and for us). They had train tickets from Toulouse to Paris and we had originally intended to take them to Toulouse this morning. However, in checking their ticket online, we saw that it also stopped at Montauban, so since Montauban was only 25 minutes away (compared to 45 for Toulouse) we decided to drop them off at Montauban Station around 0800h.

Then it was back home to prepare the barge to leave, including storing the bikes and the rear deck furniture inside. The green tinge to the furniture picture below is not a camera problem, but a result of the green tarps over the top of the dog-box.

Since we arrived back in Moissac, we hadn’t been able to catch up with Kaz and Iain to say farewell. But as we were packing up, I saw them walking along the other side of the canal with their dog Ziggy, and called out to them. I then met them at the footbridge over the lock and gave them some keys to the barge, since Iain had agreed to winterise the barge and do a service on the main engine and the generator after we left. Hopefully, they will still be in Moissac when we get back next year. We look forward to seeing the completed renovations on their house.

Then it was time to leave Moissac in late morning, and drive to Besain where we had arranged to stay overnight with good friends Sarah and Albon. As has happened on every occasion to date, the curse of Lyon struck again, with me getting somewhat lost as we tried to navigate the roadworks around the town. You’d think I would learn!!
