Thursday 22 June - AFL, Kuno & Helen, drinks at Turkish cafe

After a very lazy morning, I tuned into the AFL Footy app to follow the game between the Hawks and Adelaide. After several years of great success (triple premierships), last year the Hawks bowed out in the finals and this year, with several players departing for other clubs, an ageing list and a bunch of injuries to senior players, they have not been doing very well, with several huge losses and only 4 wins from 13 games.  So it was more out of interest than anticipation that I tuned into this game, especially since Adelaide were on top of the table and the Hawks were second-last. The Hawks jumped away quickly, but were gradually overhauled by the Crows, and when the Crows kicked two late goals to take an 18-point lead into half-time, I was not too disappointed to leave the game when Rita’s brother Kuno and his partner Helen arrived for lunch. It was therefore with great surprise later in the afternoon when I picked up my phone to see that the Hawks had run out winners by 14 points, having kicked 8 goals to 3 in the second half. Luckily I am not taking footy too seriously this year, because such wins can be frustrating when you see what they can do sometimes (but not consistently any more).

In the late afternoon, Rita’s friend Sarah swung by to drive us down to the Aare River in town, where she and Rita planned to have a swim, and I planned to mind their clothes as I sat in the bar. Over the course of the evening we were joined by Gere (who constructed the interior of our Pan Bus in Taggerty) and then again by Kuno and Helen. A few drinks and nibbles later, we hijacked an incoming customer to take our photo (Kuno, Gere, Tony, Sarah, Rita and helen).
