Thursday 10 August - cool, diesel, l'Escapade, saws, rain, drinks, dinner
Cool again this morning, but at least that means we are getting a restful sleep. In the morning, I puddled 50m across the canal backwards to moor near the diesel pump, and then filled with 500 litres. It has been a while since we last filled, when we surprisingly bought 1100 litres. Not sure how much is left (the gauge is broken), but we figure that 500 litres will easily see us through this year. We should probably get the fuel gauge fixed before we go up north, since buying diesel may not be as convenient there as in Moissac.
As we were preparing to fill, l’Escapade arrived in Moissac, and immediately turned left and went down through the locks to the Tarn. Once we had brought Kanumbra back into her own mooring spot, with a perfect sideways glide, I went down to see David Rothery to check about some power saws that he said he had for sale. He said they were down in the bilge, and that I should come back tomorrow when Evelyn was on board, because she knew more about them than he did.
When I got down to L’escapade initially, David was talking with Rob about “boaty” things, and Rob showed him a neat little device to show if a electrical wire is carrying current or not (even though it’s called a voltage detector). Downstream of a switch (when the switch is turned off) it shows nothing, but upstream it shows “something”. When the switch is turned on, it shows something on both sides of the switch. it could also detect where there is a break in a cable under the plastic sheathing, which is why they were talking about it, given David’s recent experiences. To save me not remembering the name of this gadget, here is a photo.
In the afternoon, Rita went up to a story-telling performance by Bernard and while she was out we got some very heavy rain, which put paid to any thoughts I had about painting the deck. Damn! However, it stopped just in time to go up for drinks at Irene’s, before a group of us went to dinner at the Uvarium Cafe.
