Tuesday 19 July - rest day, ride to Mutti, Aare, Ringgenberg, Gere
Today was a Rest Day for the Tour riders, and so we also got into the swing of things by having an easy day as well. But inspired by their efforts yesterday, we decided to at least incorporate some cycling into the day, so we cycled out to Mutti’s, stopping along the way to take a picture of the road on which the Tour entered yesteday, under the Münster and past Kuno’s place at far right.
After brunch with Mutti, we continued cycling into the countryside and up the Aare River.
As the day was fairly warm, Rita decided that she would like to take a dip in the Aare. So we stopped at a little rock pool on the side of the river, and she went for a dip, only to discover that it was even cooler than she expected it to be...
In the evening, we went to dinner with Kuno, Helen and his three boys at Ringgenberg Cafe, an overflow in a park area from a nearby indoor restaurant. Good food, nice atmosphere and plenty of conversation. On the way home, Rita and I decided to walk past Gere’s house, just on the off-chance that he was sitting in one of the nearby outdoor cafes. Even better we saw him sitting outside his house, talking to some people (who turned out to be his brother and other relatives). We just ambled up and stood in front of him as he talked with them. Initally, he didn’t see us (but must have wondered “why are these people standing so close to me?”). So Rita rang the bell on her bike, and only when he looked up did he realise who we were. Great surprise! We then had a long chat about what he was now doing and what we were up to. A very nice serendipitous encounter.
