Sunday 17 July - Bahndli, Aare ride, zoo, riverbank sleep
In the morning, Rita and I took our bicycles on the red Bahndli (Swiss for “little train”) over the Kirchenfeldbrücke near the Bern Münster and went out to Mutti’s for brunch.
After a couple of hours, we left her apartment to go for a ride in the countryside. It was a beautiful clear day, and although it was nearing the middle of summer, the Swiss Alps in the distance were still covered in snow and looking as magnificent as ever.
We rode up the banks of the Aare River for a while, and saw hundreds of inflatable rafts floating down the river, along with countless heads bobbing in the water as it seemed that half the Bern population was in the cold, rushing Aare.
On the way back to town, we passed by the Bern Zoo on the banks of the Aare, and took this shot to prove that my t-shirt was an accurate representation of Swiss wildlife. Not often you get a picture of three different types of goat in the one shot!
As we completed our circuit back to near Kuno’s house, we found a grassy spot on the Aare riverbank and lay down for a rest. We were soon fast asleep.
