Tuesday 26 May - leaving Melbourne

This year we are back on our favourite airline, Singapore Air. Rita has already flown from Melboune to Zurich on May 20 and will then spend a week in Bern with her Mum, who is celebrating her birthday. I am flying today from Melbourne to Paris, and then taking the train to Moissac. Unlike previous years, the flight to Paris is cheaper than to Barcelona, while the rail fare from Paris to Barcelona is about the same as from Barcelona to Moissac. However, since the Paris train leaves directly from Charles de Gaulle airport, I thought I would give it a try this year. One of the things I particularly like about Singapore Air is their frequent flyer club, KrisFlyer, which allows you to use accumulated points to pay for future tickets that you would have bought for cash otherwise. So, for example, our flights this year were reduced in price by about $1000 as a result of frequent flyer points that we had built up over the past year.

One of the disadvantages of living in Taggerty, when it comes time to fly, is that it's 120 km to Melbourne airport. But one of the advantages is that there are good friends who will drop everything to drive you to the airport. Just a short two hour drive there and back!! Thanks Doug. Another good thing is that there are other friends willing to do the same if Doug couldn't. Thanks Susan.

Doug had originally agreed to drive me to the airport on Wednesday morning, since that was when I had thought I was flying (given that Rita flew out last Wednesday). However, on Sunday I got an email from Singapore Airlines inviting me to check-in online. Normally this email arrives a day or two before the flight, but I just thought they were getting in a bit early. However, as I was doing the check-in, it occurred to me that something was not quite right, and on double-checking my calendar I realised that I was flying out on Tuesday, not Wednesday!!!  It was fortunate that I found this, since the flight confirmation from Singapore Air contains only the date and not the day. However, all’s well that ends well, and Doug was thankfully free on the Tuesday and willing to drive me down that day.

So now I'm sitting at Melbourne Airport waiting for the first leg with my good friends Singapore Airlines.

After an uneventful 8 hour flight (the best types of flight), we arrived in Singapore, where I had two hours to spend waiting in my favourite airport, Changi. Then it was on to Paris.
