Friday 31 July - rainy morning, AFL, Castelsarassin Rugby
Friday brought another rainy morning. It seems that the consistent heat that we have had throughout July has abated somewhat, and we are now getting the more variable weather that we have seen in previous years. Rita called Bern to enquire about her dad, and found he was still in hospital. We are glad we are staying around Moissac, just in case an urgent trip is needed.
Around noon, I watched the AFL game between the Hawks and the Richmond Tigers. In recent years, the Tigers have been a bogey team for the Hawks, beating us when we least expected it. In 2013, they were the last team in that season to beat us before we went on to win the Premiership. So let’s hope that this is a trend, because they beat us again 71-53. Actually, they played well, putting a lot of pressure on players, causing many uncharacteristic mistakes. Here’s hoping that’s our last defeat for the year!
In the evening, we had a change in football code, when we went to Castelsarassin with Andre and Francoise (son-in-law and daughter of our neighbours) to watch a Rugby Union game between Montauban and Tarbes.
It was a very enjoyable, if slightly damp, evening. It proved that local football is the same all round the world, with lots of friendly banter, and it also seems that football fans around the world all have the same dietary needs - chips, hotdogs and beer! For the record, the game was tied, 16-16.
