Wednesday 5 Aug - departures, swimming, reading, noon siren, hot and humid
After the Night Market, today was a bit of an anti-climax. Anna and Hilda May departed. This would be the last we would see of Stuart and Christine this year since they were scheduled to head back to the UK before we got back to Moissac - but at least we will see them in Australia next January.
So we spent a lazy day in Damazan; Rita went swimming at the lake, while I stayed on the boat reading.
In the late morning we went into town to do a little shopping and then stopped for a drink at a bar in town. At noon, the town air raid siren sounded, scaring the hell out of us and causing everyone else in the bar to put their fingers in their ears! We asked those at the next table and learned that in the olden days many of the workers in the surrounding fields did not have watches, and so this was the way to tell them it was lunchtime and that they could stop working. The tradition has continued ever since.
In the afternoon, we went back to the barge and awaited instructions for how Rita should join the video-conference for the Trinidad Pan Conference tomorrow. We were not wanting to leave Damazan because of the good phone reception here on the barge, but later in the afternoon Rita went up to the Mairie to see if there was a wifi that she could log into for the video-conference. After a few phone calls, she spoke to the librarian who said she could use their facilities tomorrow (even though they were not officially open, she would come in to open up for Rita - now that’s typical small town French hospitality!)
The evening was hot and humid, with lots of mozzies around in the surrounding grass and trees. Not a very pleasant night.
