Friday 14 Aug - overnight rain, doing the books, pan practice, Night Market

Once again, we had overnight rain and the new day dawned much cooler, so we decided to just sit out the wind and rain. In the meantime I did the TUTI books for the accountant, while Rita did some practice on the pan, playing Africa (by Toto) - one of our pieces for the PANZfest 2015 Steelband Festival in Brisbane in September.

When the weather cleared a bit in the afternoon, we went for a walk around town, exploring some of the surrounding residential areas outside the bastide walls, and then the northern end of the bastide, including the old roman church.

Another reason for staying in Vianne today was that the Night Market was on again (every Friday). The weather was still threatening, so we ate indoors at Les Marrionniers. One of the reasons for coming back to Vianne was that we had learned that Janouille, the “jester” who did the guided evening walk around Nerac on Wednesday night, would be doing a similar thing in Vianne as a feature of the Night Market. Since we had enjoyed the Nerac walk, and learned so much about the town from it, we figured that doing the same in Vianne would also be useful. And we were not disappointed! The group who did the costumed re-enactment last week joined in again in their costumes, as we went to the old church, the bastide walls and even past our barge moored on the Baise.

After we got back to the centre of town after about a 90-minute walk, two fire-twirlers kept us entertained until nearly midnight.

Rita and I then adjourned to Les Marrionniers for a nightcap drink, where we were joined at our table by Janouille and the fire-twirlers. We talked with him about the towns that he did tours in, but alas Moissac was not one of them. We therefore suggested he might contact the Mairie to see if they were interested in him developing a program for them. We also learned that the two fire-twirlers (French and Taiwanese) met while they were both backpacking in Australia (much like Nico and Miyu), where he learnt fire-twirling from her. Once again, a great night in Vianne, confirming it as one of my favourite towns.
