Thursday 29 August - leaving St Gery, Arcambal, reading, Chateau, Venus

Another foggy morning. Rita went up to the Boulangerie and the Poste, then we departed in mid-morning with the Austrians. We went through the first lock with them, and then they stopped in Vers. We continued on and two locks later they caught up with us so we double-locked with them again. They have been very helpful with the locking once they learned of Rita’s ankle problems. We said farewell to them at Arcambal, when we stopped for the day. We spent most of the afternoon lazing in the sun and reading our Donna Leon paperback novels.

In the evening we went for a walk through Arcambal, bought some vegetables from a 1-stall market, and then checked out the local chateau – with the stables and courtyard just inside the huge iron gates at the entrance, you could almost hear the click-clack of horse-drawn carriages from centuries past!

The evening was a time for contemplating reflections across the river, and for watching Venus rising in the night sky.
